How Do I Do Daily Devotions?

Have you ever asked yourself the question, How do I do daily devotions?

Maybe you’ve turned a page in your walk with Jesus, or you’d say you’ve got some junk you’re dealing with in your life. Maybe you just made the decision to follow Jesus, or you’ve decided you’re going to start your day off right by connecting with Him. But then you think to yourself, “How do I do that?

We’ve been discussing how much God loves you and how He wants to connect with you every day. I’ve found in my own life and from feedback from others that there’s this question that hangs out there of “How?” It’s like this secret formula that everyone’s trying to find. Do I just pick a book in the Bible? Do I start in the New Testament or the Old Testament? And the questions go on and on.

Here’s an idea I’ve found to be helpful in my life when it comes to connecting with God through reading the Bible.

There’s one word I want to share with you today. It’s a familiar one, easy to remember, and hopefully this is a word that’s already part of your life every day.
It’s the word SOAP. And here’s how you’d apply it to your daily devotions.

Using SOAP for your devotions:

S – Scripture (Pick a chapter, a Book, or even a passage of Scripture)

O – Observation (What did you observe in your reading? Was there something that stood out?)

A – Application (How can you apply that to your life? Or to your walk with Christ?)

P – Prayer (Take a few minutes with God. Pray about what you just studied and ask God what He has for you today.)

And that’s it! That’s how you apply SOAP to your daily devotions. Just like you need soap every day for personal hygiene, you need devotions EVERY DAY to stay connected to your true source of strength in your life. Never forget, God loves you and wants to connect with you every day of your life. And engaging with God in daily devotions is one of the best ways I’ve found to connect with Him.

If you’ve found other ways that you’ve connected with God through devotions, I’d like to hear to hear about it. Or if you start to implement SOAP, I’d love to hear from you on how your devotion time is going.

I just learned another acronym for studying scripture and it’s spacepets. S:sin to confess P: promise to claim A: attitude to change C: command to obey E: example to follow P: prayer to pray E: error to avoid T: truth to believe S: something to praise God for. I know it’s a little longer to do and not all passages will apply to all of the letters sometimes but I love digging into the Word this way. Thanks for your tip also.
